Kathy Shane.
What can we say? She has turned her gypsy and Irish roots, her
passion for creativity, her somewhat limited attention span, and her
three-decade long love affair with music into a lifestyle, a career, and a
labour of love.
The Creativity Channel: In Sept
2008 I founded a mentorship class which I teach and/or host for a small
group of kids on Sunday afternoons throughout the year. It's a creative
performance-based class for kids from 8-12"ish". We explore creativity in
many of its facets. It's geared towards kids who have an interest in the
biz and/or a love of things creative.
Some of the things we've gotten up to:
- Voice
Over: We've visited several production houses
(voice over studios) in Calgary and have worked with scripts and on mic.
We've produced voice over demos for the kids to be able to email to
the studios as a calling card.
- Singing:
We've had guest vocal pro Johanna
Sillanpaa teach a master class (www.johannamusic.com), and we've worked
on mic technique and performer vs. audience aspects.
- On Camera Work: Tom Jackson (www.tomali.com) has been
in many times and talked to the kids about the biz; we work on acting
for the camera (vs. stage), and getting in touch with emotional life
of characters.
- Improv: Lots can be gleaned from improv, and the
kids love it! I studied with Keith Johnstone (www.keithjohnstone.com) in
university and we've had Loose Mooser Burhan Syed bring his bag of
tricks to the classes as well.
- Intro to Puppetry: With Steve Jarand
(www.stevejarand.com).
- Intro to Comedy: With Roman Danylo
(www.romandanylo.com).
- Intro to Painting: With Dean Stanton from Sunalta
school mural, Science Centre, Talisman Centre etc etc etc fame (www.albertaartists.com/dean/stanton.html)
- Intro to Cartoon Voicing: With Jonathan Love and
Brad Belden (www.toonvox.com).
